I would like to share my experience with the law firm Alex Danos in Cyprus regarding a medical negligence case. From the beginning, it was agreed that I would pay €1,785 for the firm to review my case until the medical expert’s report was obtained. It was also agreed that they would appoint a medical expert from their own network, whose fees were expected to be around €1,000. According to the agreement, if the expert report was favourable, the legal fees would be €3,500 plus 10–15% of the final compensation. If the report was less favourable, the legal fees would be €5,500 plus 10–15% of the final compensation. Before hiring this firm, I had already contacted a medical expert, but he was taking a very long time to provide a quotation. I repeatedly asked Alex Danos and his colleagues to appoint another expert from their own network so that my case could move forward more quickly, especially since I believed the limitation period was approaching. However, they ignored my requests and continued working with the same expert, who was significantly more expensive. Every time I raised the issue, I was told that changing experts would cause further delays because the limitation period was supposedly too close. I later discovered that, under the applicable rules, the three-year limitation period begins from the date the medical negligence is discovered and supported by an expert medical opinion confirming the negligence. I had not been informed of this. I personally created a website containing all the evidence, medical records and documentation relating to my case. Despite this, the Alex Danos law firm claimed they had carried out a tremendous amount of work. In my opinion, this is simply not true because I had already provided all the documentation directly to the medical expert. I do not believe the firm carried out any significant work to justify charging me €1,785, especially considering that I am a severely disabled person with very limited financial resources. I also had to repeatedly chase the medical expert to obtain his summary report, which took more than 30 days to arrive. The expert then emailed me asking whether my lawyer would be paying part or all of his professional fees. The law firm had also received a very favourable preliminary report. I therefore asked my lawyer to approve the quotation so that I could transfer the €3,500 (excluding VAT) to the law firm, who would then pay the medical expert on my behalf. Instead, the firm stated that they would never pay the medical expert and that they would not handle this payment. I explained that I was not asking them to cover the cost themselves—I simply wanted to transfer the funds to my lawyer so that he could pay the expert, which I believed was a normal part of managing a legal case. They even claimed that the doctor had never sent such an email, despite the fact that I possess a copy of it. One morning, I received an email from Alex Danos stating that even if I obtained a favourable medical report, he would not necessarily proceed with legal action unless he believed the chances of success were excellent. This completely contradicted what had been explained to me at the beginning of our agreement, where the fees were clearly based on whether the medical report was favourable or moderately favourable. Even worse, later that same afternoon, the firm terminated our professional relationship. They even stated that the medical expert was prepared to provide a statement in their favour. I immediately requested a refund of the €1,785 I had paid, but my request was refused. I believe I was abandoned shortly before what I believed to be the expiry of the limitation period, after paying a substantial amount for work that, in my view, was never actually carried out. I find this treatment particularly shocking towards a severely disabled person with no income, who had to take out a loan to pay for legal representation. Throughout my experience, I felt that the firm was primarily concerned with money rather than with defending its client’s interests. I do not intend to leave the matter there. I will be filing a formal complaint with the Cyprus Bar Association and requesting a thorough investigation into the firm’s conduct. I will also seek reimbursement of the €1,785 because I believe the promised legal services were not provided. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this law firm.

I believe in the saying that a customer is always right but that is not the case with Danos Law Firm since their staff were impolite whenever I would contact their office to check the status of my offshore business. I hired them to help my life get easier in setting my company up but I made the wrong choice.
